In pre-pandemic times, the renowned pianist and composer Eunice Martins was Arsenal’s guest (almost) every month. We are building upon this and are delighted that in the future, Martins will regularly accompany works of well-known and yet to be discovered silent film actresses on the piano. The focus of the opening event is Ossi Oswalda, one of the great divas of early German cinema. In Ernst Lubitsch's comedy ICH MÖCHTE KEIN MANN SEIN (1918), she plays the rebellious young Ossi, who, to the horror of her governess, unrestrainedly indulges her passion for cigarettes, poker, and high-proof spirits. She evades yet another attempt at education with a daring change of role. Dressed in tails and a top hat, she visits a nightclub, where she meets various young ladies as well as her newly hired tutor. As a prelude, we will show FRÄULEIN PICCOLO (Franz Hofer, 1914) with Dorrit Weixler, also in a trouser role. (mg)
